Find answers to common questions about therapy, telehealth, fees, and more.
What is sex therapy?
Sex therapy is a specialized form of psychotherapy that focuses on sexual health, function, and well-being. It addresses concerns such as desire, arousal, orgasm, pain, intimacy, sexual shame, and relationship dynamics around sexuality. Sessions are talk-based — there is no physical contact or nudity involved.
What can I expect in the first session?
The initial session (intake) is an opportunity to share your concerns, goals, and background. Dr. Steen will listen carefully, ask questions to understand your experience, and begin to develop a collaborative treatment plan. It’s a safe, nonjudgmental space.
How long does therapy take?
The duration of therapy varies based on your unique needs and goals. Some clients benefit from short-term work (8–12 sessions), while others find value in longer-term support. Progress is discussed regularly to ensure therapy is meeting your needs.
Do you accept insurance?
Dr. Steen is an out-of-network provider. A superbill can be provided upon request for potential reimbursement through your insurance company. It’s recommended to check with your insurance about out-of-network mental health benefits.
All sessions are conducted via a secure, HIPAA-compliant video platform. You’ll need a device with a camera, microphone, and reliable internet connection. A private, quiet space is recommended for your comfort and confidentiality.
What states do you serve?
Dr. Steen is licensed to practice in Oregon and Alabama. All sessions are conducted via telehealth, so you can receive therapy from anywhere within these states.
Is therapy confidential?
Yes, therapy is confidential. Information shared in sessions is protected by law and professional ethics. There are limited exceptions (e.g., imminent danger, mandated reporting), which will be discussed during your first session.
Are you LGBTQIA+ affirming?
Absolutely. Dr. Steen is committed to providing inclusive, affirming care for all sexual orientations, gender identities, and relationship types. She works from a sex-positive, culturally sensitive framework.
